HANDCRAFTED JAPANESE GLASS BEAD ACCESSORIES · NEGAITAMA.COM
願魂 negaitama — "soul of wishes"Dwelling within every bead are the spirits of eight million Japanese gods.
Each piece is crafted by a skilled artisan, infused with your prayers and wishes, one bead at a time.

CONCEPT
Since ancient times, Japan has been home to eight million gods — the spirits said to dwell in nature, tools, and even words. NEGAITAMA creates designs inspired by these countless prayers and wishes, shaped one by one by skilled Tonbodama artisans into a handcrafted Japanese glass bead collection.
Every bead is a unique work of art. The artisan holds your wish in mind as molten glass is wound around a mandrel over the flame, shaped, decorated, and slowly cooled — a process that cannot be replicated by machine.
願魂(ねがいたま)は、数多の祈りや願いをもとに文様を創作し、熟練の蜻蛉玉職人によって願いを込めてひとつひとつ丹念に造形した手作りのガラス工芸コレクションです。
EIGHT MILLION GODS
The souls of eight million gods dwell in nature, tools, and words — watching over people, sometimes guiding them, and bringing fortune. The artisan's prayer in each bead reaches your wish through their hands.
NEGAITAMA (願魂) is an original Japanese glass bead brand created by Noichi, a specialty shop in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Each design is inspired by traditional Japanese patterns carrying specific prayers and wishes — and each bead is handcrafted by a skilled artisan who infuses your wish into the piece as they work.
Each NEGAITAMA bead is made by a skilled glass artisan on your behalf, one by one, with your wish in mind. Choose a pattern that matches the wish you want to fulfill.

The world of eight million gods
Tonbodama (蜻蛉玉) is the Japanese term for handcrafted glass beads with a hole through the center. Known internationally as Glass Beads, this Japanese name comes from a specific bead style — a blue-white base decorated with red floral patterns — said to resemble the compound eyes of a dragonfly (蜻蛉/tonbo), as beautiful and intricate as the insect's gaze.
Japan's oldest glass bead mold was excavated from Shimoshichimi Ruins in Yamaguchi Prefecture (Middle Yayoi period) — the very home of NEGAITAMA. Each Tonbodama is a unique handcrafted work of art that cannot be mass-produced. Molten glass is wound over a flame and shaped entirely by the artisan's skilled hands.

The Tonbodama making process
The world's oldest glass beads were excavated from 3rd millennium BC sites in Syria, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. From the ancient world, Tonbodama served not just as decoration but as important trade goods, carried along the Silk Road and sea trade routes to Africa, Europe, and Asia.
Venice developed glass beads using ancient techniques for African trade. Made with millefiori (mosaic) glass technology, Venetian beads became key trade commodities exchanged for African treasures, and were later distributed worldwide through the Dutch East and West India Companies.
Dutch Tonbodama arrived in Japan through Dejima (Nagasaki) in the Edo period, inspiring generations of Japanese artisans. Today they flourish as bracelets, necklaces, straps, earrings, and more. Recently, antique and vintage beads reimagined in contemporary designs are also attracting global attention.
